Specific dog foods help the growth, gut and gestation of purebreds
Breed, life stage and gestation specific dog food formulations have helped breeders advocate for National American Kennel Club Championship 2019 to achieve ideal and reproducible results from their animals. Brands that meet the needs of dog breeders may find product loyalty benefits among average pet owners.

Dog breeders and pet food companies work together
“If the predictable result of dog food is there, then the predictability of that specific breed is there,” said Bill Shelton, Welsh Corgi breeder.
Pet food companies are partnering with breeders to make these dog foods meet the specific needs of each breed, he said. Although, in his case, Corgi do not need a specific wording. It uses Royal Canin’s formulation for medium dogs. He needs a formulation that does not provide too much of certain nutrients, especially for young dogs.
“My breed has a predisposition to what they call a premature elbow closure,” Shelton said. “If we grow them too fast on a food that is very high in protein and fat, it causes what we call growing pains in children. “
Although the Welsh Corgi rose to fame as a dog of British royalty over the past century, before that they were working class dogs, he said. As such, they have developed digestive systems capable of gleaning every nutrient from sometimes scarce meals.
“If I fed a German Shepherd the food of a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, those would be small reservoirs because they have a digestive system that metabolizes everything, unlike a German Shepherd.”
German Shepherd formulations treat the digestive deficiencies of these dogs, said Kent Boyles and Liz Oster of Kenlyn German Shepherds in Edgerton, Wisconsin, United States. Beyond that, as breeders they appreciate the ability to switch from one formulation to another throughout a dog’s life. Even before dogs are born, he uses specific formulations for pregnant bitches. As the puppies get started, he can use specially formulated diets to help young German Shepherds start eating solid foods.
“Once you start feeding a product that seems to work, it certainly seems like the basic job for mothers and babies during the gestation period and when the mother is giving birth,” he said. .
Boyles developed a relationship with Royal Canin for the needs of his German Shepherd. So much so that one of his dogs appears in the brand’s advertising media. This link with Royal Canin could strengthen brand loyalty for dog food among buyers of its German Shepherds.
“Once I tell them, puppy buyers, that’s what we feed, they never change,” he said.
While the demands of the best dog breeders may exceed the average needs of pet owners, dog food brands that can meet the rigorous standards of breeders can meet those of increasingly selective pet owners.
